President Obama has spoken to his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani by telephone, the first direct contact between the leaders of the United States and Iran for more than 30 years. After the call, he said he believed the two sides could agree a solution to the dispute over Iran's controversial nuclear programme. From New York, here's our diplomatic correspondent Bridget Kendall.
White House officials described the 15-minute phone call between the two leaders as cordial. Speaking afterwards to reporters, President Obama warned that there would be challenges and obstacles ahead, and success was by no means guaranteed. The very fact he said that it had been so long since American and Iranian president had even exchanged words was a reminder of the deep mistrust there had been. But he said he did believe a comprehensive solution was possible. For his part, President Rouhani also sounded positive. Earlier he had told journalists that the success of his trip to New York to launch a new era in Iran's relations with the West had exceeded his expectations, and he too hoped a solution to the nuclear dispute could be swiftly found.
