One of his earliest paintings in Amsterdam showed a renowned surgeon giving an anatomy lesson. It pointed the way to what the artist would do in The Night Watch.
The Anatomy Lesson of Doctor Tulp was painted in 1632 and in a way was his first great calling card in Amsterdam. I mean, this was the picture that established his reputation. The lighting is powerful in the manner, we see ten years later in The Night Watch, so you do get this strong spotlight on the corpse in the foreground, and then the light reflected onto the faces. And the technique the way it's painted, this intensely lively and life-like characterisation of the heads, which is what Rembrandt became famous for and that's what he announces in The Anatomy Lesson of Doctor Tulp.
In Amsterdam, Rembrandt had met and married Saskia Uylenburgh. She'd inherited a large fortune and, with the good money that Rembrandt was earning from his paintings, the young couple lived a good life. |
