But first, in May this year, 27-year-old Raha Moharrak became the first Saudi woman and the youngest Arab to reach the summit of Everest. She comes from a society where women aren't allowed to drive and need the permission of a male guardian for many activities. But she's highly independent, sporty and as you'll hear, isn't going to let anything get in her way. I asked Raha when she first became interested in climbing.
Funny story. I started November, 2011. So not much time has passed since then. And why? I was really at a crossroads. I had just left my job, moving back to Saudi Arabia and I needed something to just give me a kick in my life, and I didn't know exactly what it was. I kept searching for different adventures to do. And then the idea of doing Kilimanjaro came along when someone said I couldn't do it because I was Saudi. And then everything just fell into place.
Well, you felt that you should break down that barrier?
I felt like why was I not able to do something just because I was born with a certain coloured passport? And to me that's the worst thing you can do to an individual, is put them in the box and give them limitations just because of something that's as trivial as their nationality.
