But first as phone bills go, this is a huge one. The American Verizon Mobile Group is paying out $130 billion to its shareholder, the British telecoms giant Vodafone. And it's a sign that another big British company is a little less influential on the global stage. So what is Verizon getting for parting with such a huge amount of cash? They've wanted to own 100% of their mobile business for a long time. They have control of it to an extent but they can't fully integrate it with their fixed line business in the US, which is a very large business. They've made it clear to everyone that they want to own 100%. And it's got to a point where they feel that they can afford to pay a price that Vodafone is willing to accept.
How long will it take Verizon to effectively earn its money back? It's $130 billion. It is a huge sum of money.
