The worshippers greet each other. This small church is the heart of miracle village. A unique Christian community dedicated to helping sex offenders rebuild their lives. Its remoteness means those who live here comply with Florida's residency restrictions for sex offenders, laws that prohibit them from residing within up to 2,500 feet, just under a kilometre, of schools, day care centres, parks, bus stops even, the places where children gather.
I'm Pat Powers, an executive director, Matthew 25 Ministries & Miracle Village. And we're at the tip of the everglades. We have alligators all the way around us and canals all the way around us. So we're slightly isolated. That's 104 apartments.
And they're all in these very sweet little bungalows.
Yes.
And what was this originally then, Pat?
This was a US sugar village for the migrant workers they brought over from Haiti and places like that. You got papaya, you got avocado. She got mangoes, bananas. It's a tropical paradise.
And so you've got over 200 residents, about half of them, around 100 are sex offenders?
Yes.
Convicted sex offenders?
Yes.
Under sex offender's registry here in Florida?
Yes.
And how do people live? Do they all live mixed-up together or do you have the sex offenders in one bit and everybody else in the other?
No no no. All together, all different places. Nobody set anyone's spot. It's one most peaceful places. It's like, you know, God's hand is over us.
Is that what you believe?
Yes, I believe.
But you haven't always been like that.
