Piero
The Resurrection
I think what's remarkable about what Piero does in this picture is create this extraordinary sense of stillness. He creates a sense whereby you feel as almost as if the world has come to a standstill and you with it. And so it gives you pause to think about what this extraordinary event was, the resurrection of Christ. And so the looking becomes very very charged. It's a very emotional experience, it's a great rush if you like of, of feeling that you have as you see this, this thing which is so perfect really.
The Resurrection confirmed Piero's reputation as a deeply respected artist of his age. But after his death, appreciation of his skills began to decline. It didn't help that his best work had to be hunted down in out-of-the-way places like Sansepolcro and in any case, styles in art were moving on. |
