This evening, at the Beitunia checkpoint in the West Bank, a Palestinian bagpipe band played as 26 prisoners were driven out of a jail in central Israel in buses with tinted windows. The men were freed as part of the deal to restart peace talks between the Israeli and Palestinians, their first direct negotiations in nearly three years. Some of the prisoners are being taken straight to Gaza, others are going to the West Bank, from where we join our correspondent Yolande Knell.
"Yolande, first of all, give us a brief idea of who these prisoners are?"
"Well, we're going to receive 11 Palestinian prisoners through a big metal gate that's just in front of me here, just inside the Palestinian-controlled part of the West Bank near Ramallah. And these men are men who spent, most of them, some 20 years in Israeli jails. Some of them have been convicted of murder, and that's why the release of these prisoners now is proving very controversial on the Israeli side. Israelis view these men as terrorists. In the main part there's been a lot of resistance with Israeli officials as well as families of some of those who have been killed. But then if you look all around me here, Palestinians view these men very much as heroes of the Palestinian cause. I'm surrounded by well-wishers, waving flags as well as those bagpipers.
