Piero
The Resurrection
Piero got away with it. If I'd made a similar sort of nonsense in my job, I'd've been drummed out of the Consular Service. Rum do, isn't it, Art?'
In The Resurrection it's Piero's attention to the smallest details, his mastery of fresco painting and his inventive use of perspective and balanced composition that all combine to create an image of perfect harmony in which nothing seems to be out of place. The Resurrection is a painting that seems to be able to convey, and even impose, silence.
Piero has this extraordinary sense of creating pictures in which nothing much seems to be moving and nothing much seems to be happening. But he draws you into something which seems to be deeper and more profound than simply a lot of action. There is some taste for that now and some of the artists who're greatly admired create these little psychological plays without much actual facial expression and without much overt movement and Piero was a master of that. |
