With the general election only weeks away, Tony Abbott has said that under his plans, tens of thousands of asylum-seekers who'd already been processed, would never be able to settle permanently. "Stop the boats" has been a rallying cry for Tony Abbott throughout this election campaign, a reference to the thousands of asylum-seekers who've tried to reach Australia this year. Outlining new policy proposals, he said 30,000 refugees already here or in off-shore detention camps would never be given permanent residency, even if their application for asylum was successful. Instead, he said, they'd be given temporary visas with new restrictions on rights to work.
