Because there was nothing in the scriptures to guide artists, resurrection images are relatively rare in Western art. One early plaque in ivory inventively shows God pulling Christ out of the tomb. In later resurrection scenes Christ was often shown as if He'd been catapulted into the air, to float like a weightless, ethereal being above scenes of turmoil and disbelief below. But in planning his fresco, Piero did have something to guide him an earlier image of the resurrection in the cathedral in Sansepolcro. The main altarpiece was painted over a century before by Niccolo di Segna. In the centre Christ steps from the tomb and below him the guards lie asleep. It seems very probable that Piero was asked to reflect this local treasure in his new version of The Resurrection. |
