And in his early middle age, he produced The Baptism a masterpiece of proportion, perspective and composition. Some years later he was asked to execute a huge fresco cycle for a church in the nearby city of Arezzo. The cycle, telling the complex story of the Legend of the True Cross, fills the high walls behind the main altar. As this enormous undertaking came to an end, Piero received a commission even closer to home and heart than the Arezzo frescoes. He was asked to paint a resurrection for his local town hall. No documents have ever been found giving details of the commission or what Piero was paid for his work, but The Resurrection was probably ordered by the city fathers of Sansepolcro and painted in the early years of the 1460s when Piero was about 50 years old. Being asked to produce resurrection scenes, however, presented a problem for artists.
