The Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeneß has been charged with tax evasion. Hoeneß has stunned Germany in April by saying he had voluntarily averted tax authorities in January to a Swiss bank account that he held, throwing his future at the club into doubt. The German journalist says the situation hasn't had too much of an impact on the pitch.
"The public heard the first time of it around the game Bayern Munich against Barcelona and you see Bayern Munich played with all that in the bag. Everybody knew about what's going on against Uli Hoeneß and Bayern Munich won the Champions League. Everybody expected something to happen soon. So last week there were rumours that the whole thing will not be as bad as people saw at the first point because we are talking about 3.2 million and in Germany there is a law that says if you do these things with more than €1 million you definitely have to go to jail. That's a law. More than 1 million then you go to jail. But last week suddenly they said, oh 2.3 million of that money are already gone. They are more than five years ago. So there's a statute of limitation that means that this money is not any more interesting for the prosecution. So there was a lot of hope for Uli Hoeneß and last week he spoke the first time to the media, and he said 'Yeah, I'm looking forward, and I think it's fine.' Well, today, that might be a little shock for him."
