Local authorities say the fire broke out at 4:35 this morning. No casualties have been reported. A local official says an initial investigation found that a cracked hydrogen pipeline triggered the fire during a pressure test. He says there’s no heavy damage to the plant, nor any chemical leaks. Windows on a number of nearby residences were shattered.
The plant was built in 2009 on the Gulei Peninsula. The project had originally been slated for the coastal city of Xiamen, but was called off amid protests over potential pollution and health problems. The PX project is the biggest foreign capital investment project in the city, involving nearly 2.3 billion US dollars. |
