Warhol produced nearly 100 artworks based on the Last Supper, each uniquely modified with company logos, or newspaper headlines, or camouflage patterns.
In a sense I think it was that notion of the belief in religion, which has no logic to it, and the belief in art and in the notion of masterpieces, which has no logic to it. And the two conjoined really in this work, which was ultimately to be his last major art work before his untimely death.
And so the Last Supper might have seen out the millennium, respected and spoofed in almost equal measure. But an American fiction writer had other ideas. Dan Brown's thriller, The Da Vinci Code, has sold tens of millions of copies. More people have read the book than have ever seen the original Last Supper, in all its history. And at the novel's heart is a fantastic assertion. That the figure to the right of Jesus is actually not St John but a very different Biblical character - Mary Magdalen. |
