Given Leonardo's painting technique, it's a miracle that we have the Last Supper. The work was a ruin in his own lifetime. His contemporaries complained about that. This is rare for renaissance works. Normally they knew how to make the painting, so they would survive.
The Last Supper was rotting, mould started to grow on it, and soon it covered the entire surface.
