As a painting surface unattached to a wall, it is fine. But if it is going to be attached to a surface that will become damp. It is the beginning of the end for that wall painting. It's hopeless.
In ideal conditions, the Last Supper might have survived intact. But behind its wall was the monastery's kitchen, pumping out moist heat, and under it was the city of Milan's high water table. Damp entered the wall, and pushed upwards and outwards. A fresco would have allowed the moisture out, but the Last Supper's surface could not breathe. And the paint started to flake and detach.
Leonardo's mural in effect was born with a genetic defect. And I mean his technical experiment was a failure and so what happened was that it was crippled from early on, it's been invalid for most of its history, and right now, it is effectively in intensive care. |
