But many people fear that the spread of a single international language threatens individual cultures. It is argued, for example, that the spread of one language will cause others to die out. However, there is evidence to the contrary. History suggests that the use of one or more official languages has in fact sharpened the sensitivities of speakers of other languages. More broadly, people fear that a single language will spread a single culture over the world, a movement sometimes called “language colonisation". But we should keep in mind that the purpose of an international language is for use in international contexts, not everyday ones. Any international language is likely to remain superficial.
My conclusion is, for the reasons I have given, that the enormous benefits of a single international language vastly outweigh the potential risks it presents.但是许多人担心，同一种国际语言的传播会威胁到个体文化。譬如，有人认为，一种语言的传播会造成其他语言的消亡。然而，有证据显示情况于此相反。历史表明，一种或更多种官方语言的运用，实际上会增加其他语言运用者的敏感度。更概括地说，人们担心，同一种语言将导致同一种文化在世界上的传播，有时这种运动被称为“语言殖民”。但是我们应该牢记，国际语言的宗旨正是为了在国际范围内使用而不是日常使用。任何国际语言都很可能只是停留在表面。
