When the National Gallery was founded in 1824, its collection reflected that popular taste, and so works by artists such as Uccello were entirely absent.
Collectors thought that early Italian art was unimportant. The high point of Italian art were the great Italian masters, predominantly Michelangelo, but also Raphael and Leonardo. The art that had come before that was considered to be barbaric and rather unseemly.
But a new breed of collector was emerging with a restless passion for early art. One such enthusiast was the London art-dealer Samuel Woodburn. In 1845 on a visit to Florence, he came upon the private collection that included the early day panel of the Battle of San Romano. The excitable Woodburn was so impressed that he wrote to the trustees of the National Gallery recommending the whole display.
It is a collection of 58 pictures formed with much judgement consisting of the early schools. Both me and Mr Conigham was much pleased with them, and would have bought some out at good prices.国家艺廊与1824年成立时，其馆藏反映了当时的主流喜好，所以乌切罗之流艺术家的作品付之阙如。
