"Kuiba" is back in cinemas with its second franchise "Battle of Yuan Yang World".
An innocent soul, or a demon within?
The plot of "Kuiba 2" picks up where the first film left off. Raised by a kind-hearted stepfather, 8-year old Manchi is enlisted in the legion of warriors to fight "Kuiba" the devil.
A story of friendship, blood ties and destiny, the anime feature targets general audiences rather than just kids. The writers have built a completely new world, much like the alternate universes created for "Lord of the Rings" or "Star Wars". Despite that, response to the film two years ago was underwhelming...
After the relative box office failure of the film’s first instalment in 2011, the pressure on Kuiba’s creators was on, both in ensuring the quality of the screenplay and in their marketing strategy. It was an uphill challenge, no less difficult than Manchi’s adventures in the film.
The good news is that after two years, the film’s imminent release has generated considerable buzz.
Wang Chuan, director of "Kuiba 2," said, "We spent some time rethinking the first film... We revised the script based on viewer feedback, added new characters, re-wrote some battle scenes. But the original plan of the feature series hasn’t been changed. This is the second of a five-part story, and we have managed to balance its position in the series, while letting it stand as an individual story."
Beijing-based Vasoon Studio is set to stake a claim in the local animated film market. And with its up-to-date technology, it’s looking to deliver breakthrough cinematic experiences.
Kuang Yuqi, tech. director of "Kuiba 2,", said, "Normally a 3D film is shot with a twin-lens camera, a simulation to human eyes. But in an animation feature, all footage is first done by drawing. We understand the comments that Kuiba looks like a Japanese anime. But if we’re making a realistic anime feature, we must get all the details right. That’s what we have learned from our Japanese counterparts. They’re the best in the world, so we’re just trying to catch up with the standard set by them."
Wang Chuan said, "I wasn’t in favor of using the 3D format until my team made a sample. I found that 3D DOES add a new layer to some sequences. It has made the plot easier to comprehend, and works better with the sound effects."
Going up against Hollywood productions like "The Croods", "Kuiba"’s energy and longevity will be certainly be tested. But with the second installment released with sincerity and confidence, fans have reasons to expect good things to come. |
