Gwendolyn Brooks was born in Topeka, Kansas in 1917. But she grew up in Chicago. She began writing when she was eleven years old. She mailed several poems to a community newspaper in Chicago to surprise her family.
In a radio broadcast in 1961, Mizz Brooks said her mother urged her to develop her poetic skills:
"My mother took me to the library until I guess I was about four or five. And I enjoyed reading poetry and I tried to write it till I think I was about seven, at the time that I first tried to put rhymes together. And I have loved it ever since."格温多林.布鲁克斯于1917年出生在堪萨斯州托皮卡，但她在芝加哥长大。她在十一岁时开始写作，她悄悄地把她自己写的几首诗发表在芝加哥市的一家社会报纸上时，她的家人感到很惊讶。在1961年的一次广播中，布鲁克斯女士说，她的妈妈敦促她努力提高诗歌的写作技巧：
