It's 50 years since BBC Radio has had a regular show featuring a ventriloquist on the airwaves. Now though even though it probably sounds like a slightly old idea. BBC Radio 4 has revived the ancient art form of ventriloquism. If you don't know what it is, it's when a person changes his or her voice, so that it appears that the voice is coming from somewhere or something else, usually a puppet or dummy. In other words, the person speaking doesn't appear to be moving their mouth at all.
Britain's leading ventriloquist is Nina Conti. She's become famous for her live gigs that feature a stuffed monkey, called Monkey, as well as other characters such as Gran and Dog, all of which she provides the voice for without moving her lips. Well, her new radio programme which started this week is called "Yes, Nina Conti Really Is on the Radio". So does ventriloquism work on the radio?
