The LA River was lined with concrete in the late 1930s and 1940s, after years of periodic flooding. On a recent weekend, thousands of volunteers turned out to remove trash deposited during winter rains. Today, it looks like a river again, at least in some places, says volunteer Carol Henning.

"Well, it's beginning to look a little better, I mean.  My memory of the river is people having drag races in the LA River, you know, on the cement bottom."
