But on a broader view, there is a curious claustrophobia to these paintings and eventually you realise it's because, unusually they have no sky.
This is a complete X-ray mosaic of the Battle of San Romano and it shows a very unusual and interesting feature at its corners. If you look at this corner, you can see there's an arching line that goes off to the top of the painting, and that indicates that, originally, the painting had an arched top.
Exactly what the missing arched tops depicted will never be known. But using the clues present in the paintings as we know them today, we can attempt to reconstruct them.
