Our perceptions of battles during this period have been handed down by people like Machiavelli, who was a very keen armchair soldier and he got it wrong a lot of the time. I mean, his mocking depictions of these battles where, you know, not a single person died except for one man who fell off his horse. If you look at Uccello what you see is discreet images that I think are resonant of the real horror of battle in that period.
I think that Uccello had a, what you might call a "sit-down" chat with some people who'd been there. In the Florence panel, there's a group of infantrymen who are in effect murdering someone on the ground. Three men have hold of another infantryman and have pulled his head forward and he's being held in an arm lock which is shown in combat manuals of the period, and just before they then drive a rather large rundle dagger through the back of his neck. It does imply he spoke to somebody who was there and may have demonstrated the actual combat manoeuvres.
