Tolentino started to turn the battle around. In the Florence panel, Uccello shows the turncoat mercenary, Bernardino della Carda, being dumped to the ground. And then, came the decisive moment.
A huge dust cloud was seen down there, and it turned out to be Attendolo's forces. And they hit the Milanese and Sienese here like a train, driving them back. Suddenly, they were caught between Florence's forces in a pincer movement. What happened was that their entire army imploded and fled the field.
It had been a long, hard battle fought in the full heat of an Italian summer. At the end of it, the Florentines were too exhausted to pursue the defeated enemy forces. Uccello, probably working directly from the chronicles, faithfully recorded the narrative of the day. But he also managed to transfigure it into a work of great formal beauty. |
