We have to imagine all day the Florentine waves of cavalry crashing down this hill into the Sienese and Milanese who were around about here. The valley floor would have been covered with discarded weapons, wounded troops and shattered lances. What is extraordinary isn't this didn't just happen once or twice it happened all day. It must have been absolutely exhausting.
On such a scorching hot day, knights could literally roast alive in their armour. In a tiny detail of the Florence panel, Uccello depicts camp followers fetching water to the exhausted cavalrymen. For all the efforts of the Florentine cavalry, by the middle of the day, things were going very badly for them. At one point, the enemy forces even had a chance to finish the Florentines off.
Tolentino was nearly captured himself once. And at that point, an argument broke out between the enemy captains about what was gonna happen. They made a slight withdrawal. Tolentino saw the movement and redoubled his efforts, he took heart from that, and attacked as hard as he could. |
