Tolentino, who had a reputation for recklessness proved true, once again to his rash character.
He didn't waste any time. What he appears to have done, without even putting on his full armour, is charged down the hill to get to grips with the enemy. What he does do though is to send two messengers off to be his allied army of Attendolo, and tells them to hurry up, to join him, to take on a superior force.
In the London panel, Uccello depicts both the unpremeditated engagement of Tolentino, who doesn't even have his helmet on, and the departure of the two messengers.
The Florentine forces were heavily outnumbered maybe some 4,000 men against a force doubled that size. But what Tolentino did have on his side was the element of surprise.行事鲁莽的塔伦提诺，再度发挥了他顾前不顾后的本性。
