He survived one of the bloodiest and most violent periods in recent Russian business history to emerge as one of the country's richest oligarchs - the Russian name for the handful of rich and powerful politically well-connected individuals who control the country's business landscape. No wonder then that when it comes to Oleg Deripaska, superlatives appear to be the order of the day. He controls Russia's RUSAL, the world's largest aluminium company. He's been listed by Forbes Magazine as one of the Top 100 World Billionaires. He's even been nicknamed Vladimir Putin's favourite industrialist. Mr Deripaska's business empire stretches from cars to aviation, to mining. Most recently, he settled a long-running dispute with a rival oligarch to keep control of Russia's Norilsk which produces about 20% of the world's nickel. So I started by asking Mr Deripaska, given the vast spread of his business empire, does he ever worry that he might be spreading himself too thin?
"We have a quite important, how to say, solution. First of all, we look at the development of a pure operation practice in the company to make sure that, you know, people benefit, you know, from this new opportunity which develop on production floor, you know, these increase not just productivity, but also improve working environment standard and quality. And these actually help them to influence it by themselves in our production floor.
