Florence was embroiled in a drawn out conflict which they just weren't winning, because Lucca was being backed by their old arch-enemy, Milan. At the same time, a condottiere called Bernardino della Carda who had been employed by Florence the previous year and had defected began some pretty active campaigning taking fortresses and destroying crops in the Arno valley area. So the Florentines needed to do something pretty quickly.
Florence had established a war council, the so-called Ten of War.
The Ten of War instructed that Tolentino should seek and destroy the enemy with all possible dispatch, so as we reach the beginning of June 1432, Tolentino is now moving north as quickly as he can, to try and retake the places taken and, if possible, trap the army against the hills and crush it.
