50 years ago on May 2nd, 1963, racial tensions in the US city of Birmingham, Alabama reached a peak when thousands of black schoolchildren took to the streets to protest against segregation. It became known as the Children's Crusade, and one of the children who marched was 14-year-old Gwendolyn Webb. Now 64, she has been telling Ashley Byrne her story.
"And before I'd be a slave I'll be buried in my grave.
And go home to my Lord and be free."
A powerful voice still belting out the protest song she learnt during the anti-racism marches in Birmingham, Alabama 50 years ago. For Gwendolyn Webb and other black girls and boys at the time, racism had become part of life in one of the most segregated cities in the United States.
"I was always an inquisitive child, and I always wanted to know what was going on like that: WHITE signs and the COLOURED signs, and why did we have a WHITE sign over the water or COLOURED restaurant to go into or... And I wanted to know what the different taste of the water was.
