Lsy34In Iran, more than 100 writers and poets have called for an end to the censorship of books. In an online petition, they say Iran remains one of the few countries where writers need government permission to publish. We heard more from Caserine Nagis of the BBC's Persian Service.
I think we haven't seen a petition like this, particularly from writers and poets in Iran who are amongst some of the most oppressed sections of the Iranian society. I suspect the petition itself has got something to do with the fact that we are getting close to the presidential elections in June. And they expect, I suppose, that the political atmosphere is going to open up at least to some degree in the months ahead of the elections and they want to take advantage of that.
It's nearly impossible for anybody to publish a book that is not sanctioned by the government as such. By that I mean that the government is encouraging books that are in line with the ideology of the government. Anything outside of that is almost impossible for it to be published. And in fact in the petition, these writers are demanding the government to stop censorship and stop this requirement that any title would need a government permission before it was published. Even books that have been published many times before are having difficulty these days in Iran. They need permission.
