Botticelli's 400-year-old visions were just shocking enough to turn him into a fashionable London fad. As young fops affected an interest in the newly-rediscovered painter,  satirical magazines like Punchwere in their element.

As the 20th century began, a genuine springtime blossomed for the Primavera. Botticelli's great pagan masterpiece became a target for the new generation of cultural pilgrims. It was written about by poets and novelists, and reproduced ever more. But the world was on the threshold of a less respectful age. ln 1956, the Surrealist Rene Magritte painted his typically curious take on the Primavera.
ln Magritte's satire of the painting, the figure of Flora when removed from its context all of a sudden looks campy the artificiality of her costume, the sense of cutting-edge women's wear, sudden becomes very apparent and it looks like a comic figure, in a way that simply does not in the original painting.
