The homosexual cult of Botticelli became a phenomenon in itself. It culminated in the spectacle of Oscar Wilde, a fan of Simeon Solomon, sporting knee-breeches, and clasping a lily in the fashion of a Botticellian angel. Wilde even travelled in his aesthete's garb to the American mid-West, to lecture the culture-starved locals on the wonders of Botticelli.
This growth in interest in the Primavera coincided with the earliest mass-production of art through photography and other media. So it wasn't even necessary to get to Florence to be moved by Botticelli's willowy ladies. Companies soon sprang up to satisfy the middle-class demand for fine art reproductions, at the risk of provoking a sharp intake of breath from one's visitors.
