Japan's telecoms giant Softbank is spending just over $20 billion to buy a majority stake in the US mobile carrier Sprint. The deal will bring together the third biggest mobile carriers in both Japan and the US. Softbank's billionaire founder and chief is Masayoshi Son. He's the brainchild behind this takeover. I caught up with him by phone from Tokyo earlier today and asked him what he hoped to achieve with it.
Well we have an ambition to be a global player and this is the best opportunity I found. And with this transaction we become the third largest revenue company in the world for mobile business. So I'm especially excited.
Sprint's main competitors in the United States are Verizon and AT&T. Should they be worried, do you think, with Softbank coming on the back of Sprint?
Well, competition always make each players become more working harder. So I think it's good for everybody, especially for the US consumers.
What kind of ambitions do you have in terms of market share?
