But it was the imperial cult and its demands that provoked a minor challenge to Roman religion, with world-shattering consequences. A new generation of foreign sects were starting to gain popularity in the city. And one in particular showed resistance to this worship of emperors. That cult was, of course, Christianity. And 300 years after its emergence, it would entirely reshape the city of Rome. The pagan temples would be converted into churches, leaving the Roman gods to crumble into dust. But when it first arrived in Rome, in the first century AD, Christianity looked less like a force to be feared and more like a sect of cranks with peculiar and preposterous beliefs, worthy of mockery.
