I drew the curtain and curled up to read by the heater. All was silent, the sort of silence that follows in the wake of the deaths of all living things. I set down my book and felt the urge to walk through the house, from the living room into the kitchen, checking the storeroom, bath and cellar, upstairs to open the doors of each room. There was no one, of course. Only silence which rolled like oil into every corner.
I was all alone, probably more alone than I've been in all my life.
In the Wild Sheep Chase, Murakami discovered the story he wanted to tell, the story of a loner, the solitary character whose physical and emotional journey is transformed as the book progresses into a voyage into unexplored areas of his mind and imagination. Undoubtedly it's this surreal detached introspection that has become Murakami's trademark, and which has inspired his intense relationship with his devout fan base.
