It's one of a number of air bases to have come under attack in recent days as opposition fighters attempt to counter the government's superiority in the air. Video taken in Aleppo over the last three days seems to show rebel fighters in the streets of the old city firing at Syrian army positions. Our correspondent Jim Muir is monitoring the situation from neighbouring Lebanon. Earlier he told me more about these latest developments in Aleppo.
There was this attack the government says that it has beaten it off and inflicted heavy losses on the rebel forces. Now if you watch the Syrian state media, they report a string of victories like this in various parts of the country, air bases and so on. And to take them at face value, you'd think that the war was pretty much over. But in fact they have not managed to fully control the biggest city in the country, which is Aleppo up in the north where parts of it remain disputed and some under control of the rebel forces and the same with a number of the suburbs around Damascus where, despite repeated efforts over a matter of months and very intensively in the last few days.
