The bottom of the actual painted surface would have been at least six feet off the ground. It would have been above the heads of the viewers. And that explains some details. lf you look at the central Grace, you can see the bottom of her foot, as if we're looking up at her. ln the Renaissance, you either look up at paintings, or you look down at paintings, very rarely do you look at the painting. So we should look up to the Primavera.
lf we stop thinking about the Primavera as this iconic, special piece, which is almost divorced and detached from its surroundings, it becomes much more exciting there. lf it is up on a wall, relatively high up, it joins a lot of other kinds of images such as tapestries, and that very decorative effect suddenly makes sense there. The sheer artificiality of the paint itself joins with the high gloss, the high sheen of the tapestries, that we know were in the other rooms in the house. It's going to be seen as being really avant-garde and up-to-date.
