The thought is hard to escape in Berberian Sound Studio. The director Peter Strickland's nightmare of a new movie made in Britain but set in a recording facility in 1970s' Rome where a British sound engineer and  foley artist is laying down the soundtrack for an Italian horror flick of stomach churning, nastiness. Toby Jones, son of The Elephant Man's tormentor Freddie Jones, and the man who gave us his Capote, his Dobby, the House Elf, and his Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, is Gilderoy, the techie in the tank top. Gilderoy's first day at work with a creepy producer isn't particularly reassuring. But at this stage, he's more intact than the fruit and vegetables in the room.
Toby Jones as Gilderoy feels the fear in Berberian Sound Studio. So naturally, I invited him into mine. We don't see the horrors being screened to Jones as engineer. But watching the sound effects being created seems just as disturbing.
"I think that there's an interesting thing going on, which is sound on film is often more effective when you are using analogous sounds rather than the sound itself.
