答疑：betty0925In today's programme we go back to 1963 when thieves held up a royal mail train bound for London and got away with more than £2 million. It came to be known as The Great Train Robbery. The reporter is Chloe Hadjimatheou.
It's a balmy summer's night in August, just after a public holiday. A British rail train carrying post and unusually large stocks of cash is making its way from the Scottish city of Glasgow down to London in the south. Suddenly it comes across a red signal and stops in the middle of nowhere.
Robbers climb aboard and offload more than two and a half million pounds and unmarked bills. And then they get away.
It was a story that a reporter dreams about.
Regenold Abis was a young journalist working for the BBC when he was asked to cover the robbery.
The headlines were sensational. The whole country was riveted by this amazing audacious thing. And I went onto the story a couple of days later.
The crime had involved months of intricate planning from the participants. They were 15 men from two of London's biggest criminal gangs. This was the first time they'd ever collaborated in this way.
They were regarded as the elite of the criminal world. You had to have a certain talent, audacity and certain abilities to be able to pull a heist of this magnitude.
