But there is a darker theme within the Primavera. It lies in the troubling group of figures on the right of the painting. What is portrayed in this enchanted grove is, disturbingly, a scene of sexual violence.
This is the old Roman fable of Zephyr, God of the west wind, who, overcome with lust for the wood nymph, Chloris, captures and rapes her. And a rape scene in a painting celebrating a marriage might seem out of place at least, to modern eyes.
The representation of scenes of rape or other forms of sexual violence, in fact, was quite commonly used in gifts to married couples in the form of paintings upon panels to be hung in the chamber of the married couple.
