It's 1968 and Elvis Presley's career is in the doldrums. Struggling to compete in the swinging 60s, he's given a chance to do a television Christmas special. The show, now known as the Comeback Special, was directed by a 23-year-old Californian called Steve Binder. Binder preferred the Beach Boys to Elvis. And at their first meeting, he was straight with the man known as the King.
First question he asked me was: Where do you think my career is at? And I answered: I think it's in the toilet. And he laughed and he said: Why do you think that? And I said: Because, you know, my partner and I are in the music business. And I said I hadn't seen any records of yours on the charts for a couple of years. I know that, you know, you wouldn't be doing a television special or talking about it if the movies were booming. So I think, you know, either you're gonna be remembered as the guy who was so famous before or you could explode overnight and have a whole new career.
Elvis agreed to do the show and to get himself in shape. But in the early rehearsals, Binder clashed with the King's entourage who envisaged the special consisting entirely of Christmas songs.
