"It was like a revelation", he says, "something out of the blue. There was no reason for it. No way to explain it. It was just an idea that came to me. I could do it. The time had come for me to do it."
I still can remember the wide open sky, the feel of the new grass, the satisfying crack of the bat. Something flew down from the sky at that instant. And whatever it was, I just accepted it.
The first book that Murakami wrote Hear the Wind Sing instantly picked up a major literary prize, and his writing quickly began to attract attention. Alfred Birnbaum was a young translator looking for interesting material.
I was asking around my friends what sort of writers there were and one of them recommended this book called A Slow Boat to China (Chūgoku-yuki no surou bōto) which struck me as very, very different to anything that'd come up before, simply because it was very light and full of humour, which is very unusual in Japan where everything tends to be dark and gloomy and almost suicidal.
