"It is perfect." Emily Blunt and Jason Segel in The Five-Year Engagement, a film that takes this couple from betrothal euphoria through career upheavals, misunderstandings, and dissolution, and all before they reach the altar. It's a patchy mix of modern social commentary, sex comedy and old-fashioned schmaltz. And it's a good thing that Blunt and Segel are such engaging screen presences, because even so, your patience may be tested. Segel is the big guy or child-man from Knocked Up and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Both films produced, the first also directed, by Judd Apatow, a presiding force in American comedy, the man behind films, especially of the coming-of-age, Arrested Development variety. Segel himself was most recently the lead. I think he was the lead. And there was some considerable competition in the Muppets movie, singing the Oscar-winning Man or Muppet song. But The Five-Year Engagement that already sounds like conventional romantic comedy. And aren't there enough already?
