答疑:liuczhiThe US economy has been bruised by the financial crisis and a nasty recession. It contracted by 5% by the middle of 2009. And then the recovery began. It is not being an impressive one. But President Obama and the American public can take some comfort from the most recent data.
In the last three months of last year, economic growth accelerated, not exactly Formula One's speed, but a passable 3% as an annual rate. The US has also fully reversed the declining output caused by the recession. Some European economies have not managed that yet. The jobs market has also shown a little more life lately. For each of the two most recent months, American private firms have added more than 200,000 jobs. And the unemployment rate has improved. From a peak of very nearly 10%, it's now 8.3, still too high for sure, but a move in the right direction.
As President Obama rolls up his sleeves for an election battle, the economy is not providing the heavy weapons he would like. But a few months ago, it looked like forcing him to fight with one hand tied firmly behind his back. Now he has a few more options when he gets into the ring.
