There are opportunities this week, to see excellent films from outside Britain. I love the evocative, but unsentimental Japanese film about two young brothers in a divorce split, "I Wish". And two outstanding films tackle the effect of repressive regimes on individual lives. In cinemas, from this weekend is "No", a dramatisation of the audacious television advertising campaign around the 1988 plebiscite in Chile, which ultimately ended the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. And just released on DVD is "Barbara", set in 1980s East Germany. A woman doctor is sent to work in a country clinic under, you surmise, close supervision for her suspected links with the West. I asked the critic Sandra Hebron, former Artistic Director of the London International Film Festival to consider these two films' contrasting approaches.
They're both made by filmmakers who are very intelligent and cine-literate in singular vision. I think they look at how political regimes have an impact on individual lives. And yet, despite having all these things in common, they are so very different in terms of tone and feel. So I think there's something fascinating about these two films that start from very similar points. And yet, the way the films look how they deal with their subjects are so very different.
