Leaders from the European Union and Pakistan kicked off their first ever summit on Wednesday, aiming at boosting cooperation in the fight against terrorism, and deepening trade ties. Czech President Vaclav Klaus, EU's rotating president, said the EU " takes Pakistan very seriously " and was " aware of the tremendous importance Pakistan has in the region." " We would like to make it clear that the EU supports the democratic regime in Pakistan and because we consider democracy the necessary precondition for stability, and prosperity and positive development in the country." The EU will provide a total aid of 124 million Euros to Pakistan, 72 million in humanitarian aid and 52 million of non-humanitarian aid to address this crisis. The support will be used to help the most vulnerable civilians displaced from Pakistan's Swat valley and other troubled spots affected by the international conflict in the country. |
