Now the life of Aaron Swartz was short, brilliant and collaborative, having co-authored the RSS feed, a popular way of sharing online content at the age of just 14. He went on to become the co-owner of the social news website Reddit before focusing most of his energy on the campaign for internet freedom.
His activity or hacktivity, as is known, led to an indictment by a federal grand jury for illegally downloading nearly 5 million academic documents from the JSTOR online archive. On Friday at the age of 26, Aaron Swartz committed suicide in New York. It was two years to the day since he'd been arrested and just two days since JSTOR had announced it would allow some limited access to its archive free of charge.
Well his death has seen an outpouring of emotion especially on social networks. Here's a tweet from no less a figure than Tim Berners-Lee, the British inventor of the World Wide Web, "Aaron dead. World wanderers, we have lost a wise elder. Hackers for right, we are one down. Parents all, we have lost a child. Let us weep."
Well joining me now in the studio is Heather Brooke, a journalist, writer and freedom of information activist based here in London. And Heather you knew Aaron Swartz didn't you, what kind of a person was he?
"Yeah, I met him in some various open government conferences and he was an amazing freedom of information activist and not just as some people may be in rhetoric, but he really like lived it. He was a, very much a kind of putting event to practice radical, wanted to give the public public information."
