As we record our podcast, he's reported to have fled to Turkey. And it's also claimed that he's accused the army of having abandoned its duty to protect the nation and of turning into gangs of killers.
If these reports are true, General Shalal will be the highest-ranking military police officer to defect since the beginning of the conflict in Syria nearly two years ago.
Our correspondent in neighbouring Lebanon Jim Muir told James Coomarasamy that the accounts of this defection do look reliable.
I think one can regard it as pretty much confirmed. Yet a source's confirming that he has appeared in a brief video statement broadcast on one of the Arab satellite stations, and he has been interviewed by several other stations, so, that's in voice not in vision though.
