On Sunday he said he wasn't siding with any party but said he remained available to head a future government. The point of releasing this reform agenda, he said, was it stimulates debates in the country. Mr Monti previously had supports but that fell when his predecessor Silvio Berlusconi and the party that supported him withdrew its support. Guy Dinmore is the Financial Times' Rome correspondent.
Well we don't know for sure that he will run but he's certainly declared he's ready to. The big news today is that overnight he released his manifesto, which is 25 pages long. You can download it on the Internet. And it sets out his prescriptions for Italy and Europe for the future, all 25 pages of it. Essentially he's trying to urge as broad a political alliance as possible to support this manifesto and then he would go out and run for office.
So what you're saying is if enough people can support this manifesto then he will be someone willing to be at the helm of it.
That's what we understand. I must admit his two-hour press conference yesterday was pretty confusing. And sometimes he speaks in a very academic, long-winded way and quite legalistically too. But one problem is that he is actually life senator, which means that he can't run for office, in the sense that he can't run for seat in parliament. He's already got one.
